How does it work?

Creathon 2021 is a business challenge whereby teams compete to develop surprising and innovative solutions for social challenges. We are back with our 2nd run in 2021!

In this process, professionals, students and interested citizens (Singaporeans or PR) work in teams of 5 to develop solutions for existing social challenges faced in the world today.  An idea accelerating event that triggers innovative thinking and business development

At the end of the event, the business ideas are pitched in front of a professional jury to determine the winner(s).

Creathon is a stimulating experience in co-learning and co-development of entrepreneurial skills and insight in specific details of the challenges.

Terms and Conditions

Regulation of the Event

Singapore National Co-operative Federation, SNCF, plans to carry out the event called “Creathon 2021”, on January 16 and 17, which will be governed by the provisions of these terms and conditions.

  1. Purpose

1.1 Creathon 2021 will promote a social issues challenge from November 2020 to January 2021 with the main goal of creating a Co-operative to address a challenge in the social enterprise industry.

  1. Organisation

2.1 Creathon 2021 is organised by Singapore National Co-operative Federation. These terms and the event will be promoted through the official website of the event at https://creathon2021.eventbrite.sg 

 

  1. Facilities and Infrastructure

3.1. Creathon 2021 will be held on an online platform, beginning at 1:00pm on 16 & 17 January 2021, with an expected duration of 5 consecutive hours, per day.

3.2. Singapore National Co-operative Federation reserves the right to change the date and time of the event provided for in the preceding paragraph due to logistical reasons and at its sole discretion.

3.3. Participants will be responsible for their own IT equipment, such as laptops or mobile devices and technical infrastructure necessary to participate in the event, including Wi-Fi and web access.

 

  1. Participants and Applications

4.1. Secondary school students, aged 13-17 (Year of birth 2004 – 2008) are eligible to participate in the School Category of Creathon.

4.2. Institute of Higher Learning students, aged 17-23 (Year of birth 1998- 2004) are eligible to participate in the IHL Category of Creathon.

4.3. Youth aged 17-35 (Year of birth 1986 -2004) are eligible to participate in the Open Category of Creathon.

4.4. Participants shall be responsible for the organization of the teams and each team shall consist of a minimum of 5 members.

4.5. Formal application shall be submitted at the official Creathon website – https://creathon2021.eventbrite.sg – in the period between 12:00 am of 1 September 2020 and 11:59 am of 31 October 2020.

4.6. The application shall be accompanied by the complete identification of each one of the team members, particularly: Full name, birth date, email and mailing address, for delivery of event gift. The organization ensures the confidentiality and protection of all personal data provided for participation in the Creathon, which will not be transferred or used for any other purpose.

4.7. In the event of insufficient applicants, the organiser reserves the right to make cancellations to any particular area of the competition, without explanation.

4.8. Only one application per person is allowed. Multiple application in differing teams will not be entertained.

4.9. Creathon 2021 is open to all youth in Singapore. However, to be eligible for the $10, 000 seed funding, all members of the group must be Singaporean or Permanent residents.

 

  1. Event Details

5.1. Creathon 2021 is a competition intended to encourage the creation and development of Co-operative that responds to the challenge posed by Singapore National Co-operative Federation.

5.2. The event will consist of 4 stages: Preparatory, Preliminary, Semi-Finals and Finals, beginning from November 2020 to January 2021.

5.3. The Preparatory stage will consist of Co-operative briefings, Mentorship, Problem statements and Webinars with Guest speakers from the Co-operative and Social Enterprise sector from November – December 2020.

5.4. The Preliminary stage will mark the beginning of the competition where video submissions will be required by 11 December 2020 for evaluation by the judging panel to advance to the Semi-Finals. Ten winners per category will be selected to advance to the Semi-finals.

5.5. The Semi-finals stage will be held on an online platform on 16 January 2021, where participants will be pitching their Co-operative Social Enterprise business ideas live for evaluation by the judging panel to advance to the Finals. Five winners per category will be selected to advance to the Finals.

5.5. The Finals stage will be held on an online platform on 17 January 2021, where participants will be pitching their Co-operative Social Enterprise business ideas live for evaluation by the judging panel. Three winners per category will be selected for the top 3 prizes.

5.6 Teams will be given 5 minutes for their business pitches, for all category participants and for all stages of the competition.

5.7 Creathon 2021 is expected to start at 1:00pm on 16 & 17 January 2021 and will run for 5 hours each day.

5.8. After the presentation of the ideas, the judges will deliberate in accordance with the criteria provided for in paragraph 7.1 of these terms to select the winners.

5.9. The event will conclude after the announcement of the winning teams.

 

 

  1. Panel of Judges

6.1. The panel of judges will be selected by the organisers, who will review all eligible group pitches and select the winners.

6.2. One of the panels will be appointed as chairman, who will be responsible for coordinating and ensuring the progression of the work and the panel’s final decision.

6.3. The decisions of the panel will be made by simple majority. The chairman shall have the right to cast the deciding vote, if needed.

6.4. These decisions will be made at the panel’s sole discretion. No team or team member shall make any claim or appeal against the decisions, either interlocutory or final, of the panel.

6.5. The competition organisers reserve the right to substitute or modify the judging panel at any time and for any reason.

 

  1. Selection of Winning Team(s)

7.1. For the selection of the winning team(s), the evaluation criteria of the business plan to be used by the panel will be:

Concept (50% of score)

  • Idea/concept: The concept reflects an innovative approach. The team has a clear understanding of the issue it seeks to address, why the issue is important, the recipients of the product or service, economic and social drivers of the model, and feasibility of the concept.
  • Social Impact: The business model is likely to make a substantial contribution toward the solution of the issue it seeks to address and can be sustained for a period of time consistent with achieving the desired social impact.

 

Execution (50% of score)

  • People:  The team has or can get relevant skills, contacts, industry knowledge, and experience.
  • Context: The conditions (i.e., regulatory, tax, political) are favorable. Market need, size of opportunity, competitive landscape, and potential risk are identified and manageable.
  • Resources:  The funding plan is sensible in terms of capital required to launch and operate. Funding sources are identified and a plan for securing initial investment is articulated.
  • Performance measurement: The plan takes a practical approach to milestones and organizational outcome measurement, and provides a clear plan to deliver high performance.
  • Messaging/communication: The team was persuasive in communicating the idea and its potential, through the written business plan, presentation, and Q&A.

 

 

  1. Prizes

8.1. Prizes will be awarded to the winning teams as follows:

8.2. Prizes will be delivered by 1 March 2021.

8.3. Singapore National Co-operative Federation reserves the right not to deliver prizes (in whole or in part) should the quality of the final products not meet the challenge of the event and/or should the panel of judges decide not to do so, at its sole discretion. No team or team member shall dispute or make any claims about the decision.

8.4. The payment of any taxes, fees, charges or contributions related to the prizes is the sole responsibility of each individual team member of the winning teams.

8.5. The announcement of the winners will take place at the end of the event. All will be notified (via phone or email) by the organisation for an arrangement of delivery of their prizes. The awarding of prizes to third parties will not be allowed.

8.6. Should the winners not claim their prize by December 31, 2021, they will lose the right to it and there will not be any kind of alternative compensation.

8.7 The first-place winners will be required to successfully register a co-operative within 12 months of the competition to be eligible for the $10, 000 seeding fund prize. Should the first-place winners not register a co-operative within the 12 months, the seeding fund may be made available to the second-place winners who successfully register a co-operative within 18 months of the competition. This applies to the Open Category only.

 

  1. Acceptance of and Agreement to Terms and Conditions

9.1. The application to Creathon 2021 implies the full acceptance of these terms and conditions.

9.2. Participants agree to the following conditions for the application and participation in the Creathon:

9.2.1. The solutions developed shall not feature any references of a sexual nature, explicit or suggestive, shall not be offensive, obscene, pornographic or violent or derogatory to any ethnic, racial, religious, professional or age group. They should not encourage any form of hate or group hate nor contain derogatory comments about Singapore National Co-operative Federation or its products or services, or other people, products or companies.

9.2.2. The solutions developed shall not advertise illegal drugs or firearms (or the use of either), or any activity that may convey unsafe, dangerous or political messages.

9.2.3. The solutions developed shall not present registered trademarks or logos owned by third parties or advertise or promote any brand or product of any kind.

9.2.4. The solutions developed shall not contain materials protected by copyright or property of third parties (including photographs, sculptures, paintings and other works of art or images published on websites or on television, movies or other media). Participants shall ensure that the ideas/prototypes/apps proposed are innovative and original.

9.2.5. The solutions developed shall not present any names, images, photographs or other evidence that identify any person, living or dead, without explicit authorization from them or their representatives.

9.2.6. During the course of the event, participants shall act with the utmost courtesy and respect for all persons and entities involved in the event.

9.2.7. Competitors will be required to provide proof of identity at the registration of the event to ensure that only registered individuals will be taking part in the competition.

9.3. Failure to comply with the terms and conditions provided for in this clause may result in, by decision of the panel of judges, at its sole discretion, the exclusion of the participant and/or team from the Creathon with no claim or appeal.

9.4. The organisers reserve the right to disqualify and/or exclude any participants from the competition at their sole discretion, including but not limited to when there is any breach in the Terms and Conditions.

9.5. The organisers in their sole discretion, may decide whether a replacement team or team member should be selected. In this event, any further participant team will be selected on the same criteria as the original participant/team and will be subject to these terms.

9.6. By participating in Creathon 2021, participants consent the use any photos or videos captured in the virtual environment used to conduct the event for marketing purposes and to be contacted via email for any future marketing purposes by Singapore National Co-operative Federation.

 

  1. Intellectual Property

10.1. By participating in Creathon 2021, participants acknowledge and accept, for all legal purposes, that:

  1. Ownership of intellectual property shall remain with the participants, including copyright and related rights on the ideas/prototypes/apps and their components, whose design and development the participants have been involved in during the Creathon.
  2. Participants are sole authors and owners of their entries, including but not limited to all materials and intellectual property rights (if any) in their entries, and no third-party has any right, title, claim or interest in the entries submitted for Creathon.
  3. Participants will grant the organisers unrestricted, royalty-free, non-exclusive license to use, apply, reproduce, display, broadcast, modify, summarise, adapt, sub-license and communicate the entries and intellectual property for any communication purposes, including media, case studies, social media, feature articles and other forms, without any payment or compensation to the participants.

 

  1. 11. Question or Suggestions

11.3. Any omission shall be settled by the panel of judges, pursuant to Clause 6 of these terms.

 

  1. Miscellaneous

12.1 Taxes and/or any additional cost or fees (if incurred) by the prize winner in relation to winning the prize or use of the prize are the sole responsibility of the prize winners.

12.2 Should any dispute arise in connection with the competition, or with the interpretation and/or implementation of these Terms and Conditions, the organiser’s decision will be final and no appeal will be entertained.

12.3 In the event of inconsistencies between these Terms and Conditions and any brochures, FAQ, marketing or promotional materials relating to the competition, these Terms and Conditions shall prevail. For avoidance of doubt, in any brochure, FAQ, marketing or promotional criteria constitutes a legally binding offer.
